In my office in downtown Manhattan (right across the street from South Street Seaport), the building shook quite violently.

All personnel were evacuated by the emergency stairs and had to wait outside (I guess I waited about 45 minutes or so outside the building once I and my co-workers had made it down the stairs from the 34th floor) until the FDNY inspected the structure's integrity.

Definitely an interesting afternoon in New York!

Earthquakes will definitely change your perspective on things. Having grown up with quakes, I always thought them preferable to tornados, if one can pick a natural disaster. Having now lived in ''tornado alley'', I still would rather take my chances with an earthquake. It's good to hear that the effects of yesterday's are minimal, considering the magnitude.

Yeah, I lived in Indiana during my first college stint and brief marriage. I remember watching from my window as a barn from the farm next store was lifted off the ground by a tornado and then deposited in pieces back on the ground! Frightening! And the poor animals in there that wound up killed... so sad.

But now the East Coast has a hurricane in the offing for this weekend. 90 to 100 mph winds predicted for when it ultimately hits New York City itself. Somehow, with all the tall buildings in Manhattan, that just sounds like a recipe for real disaster.

I was surprised to hear how strong the effects of the quake were in Manhattan. Up here in Rockland County it was negligible. Of course I always keep my fingers crossed that we never get any activity in the fault under Indian Point (why they keep building those things on faults is beyond me).

Glad there wasn't much damage. We were being kind of mean and saying "5.9??? That's not an earthquake." God gets even; we had a little jolt the same evening. Glad everyone is safe. They really can be scary.
