Day 18 – First episode remember seeing: THE DOUBLE AFFAIR (Season 1)
I've posted this story before, so I apologize for the rehash to anyone who is tired of reading it [chuckle]. That said...
When I was 11 years old, my 19 year old brother was my hero. He was super-cool in my eyes. He was the eldest son of the family (there were 9 siblings in total: 6 girls and 3 boys) and as such he enjoyed some special privileges, one of those being having a tiny black-and-white TV of his own in his room. Thus there, rather than in the family room, is where he usually watched the shows he followed and he was an MFU fan right from the premiere.
In mid-November of 1964, however, my brother was in the living room with me as we went about the usual pre-holiday task of sorting through boxes of Christmas ornaments and untangling strings of lights. We were still at it (and a long way from done) as the time for one of his favorite shows approached. So he tuned in MFU on the big family TV to watch while we continued to sort and detangle.
The episode showing was DOUBLE AFFAIR. I at first was only interested because my brother was so unusually animated when explaining this or that background regarding the setup of the U.N.C.L.E. organization in the series. But then came that scene with Napoleon riding the motorcycle. Oh my! exceedingly handsome spy; exciting ride on a motorbike with villains in pursuit; winding up with handsome spy in a fight for his life with his own double! From that moment on I was hooked good and proper!
Thus DOUBLE AFFAIR holds a special fond place in my heart. I know there are many who don't like it as much as other Season 1 offerings, and I'll admit I like the movie version, THE SPY WITH MY FACE, better than the episode itself. But it remains the memory of my first intro to the series I came to adore, as well as a cherished moment with the older brother (now sadly deceased) who I adored as well.
