Day 24 – Defining character moment - Alexander Waverly: The "dressing down" he gives Illya after Angela gets a message to her supposed supporters right under his nose in THE FIERY ANGEL AFFAIR
It's tempting to pick Waverly's confrontation with Solo in THE CONCRETE OVERCOAT AFFAIR for the Continental Chief's character-defining moment but, since I already gave my impressions on that confrontation earlier in this meme in answer to the most intense moment in the series, I decided to go with the above-described moment in THE FIERY ANGEL AFFAIR here.
Again we see that Waverly as a man with specific expectations of those within the organization of U.N.C.L.E. While on an assigned mission, Illya fails to meet those expectations, and thus the Old Man does not hesitate to give one of his best agents a serious scolding.
Waverly is blunt and to the point, informing Illya in no uncertain terms that, though the mission isn't over, his part in it is. That Angela had communicated with someone in her own country, and thus she could no longer be kept where she was supposedly incognito under Illya's watch.
Waverly's tone is hard and clipped as he tells Illya that he is to deliver the lady to his replacement and then report back to the Section I Number 1 himself. And Illya definitely knows he's being unequivocally though justly chastised. We see it in his facial expression. The Russian is definitely not looking forward to his face-to-face confrontation with his superior on this matter.
It is absolutely a character defining moment for Waverly, showing his no-nonsense attitude that brooks no easing of his expectations as an administrator of U.N.C.L.E. simply because the involved operative was one who had performed outstandingly in the organization for many years.
