Day 21 – Most intense moment: The confrontation between Waverly and Solo in THE CONCRETE OVERCOAT AFFAIR

No question on this one to my mind. Napoleon was pushing Waverly to the limit, determined not to let Illya and Pia just be abandoned as casualties to "the greater good". And Waverly was certainly pushing back: "Are you an operative in this organization, Mr. Solo?" Yikes!

Of course in the end Waverly provides that small window of opportunity for Napoleon to go on a lone rescue mission for Illya and the innocent. But only after Napoleon has already backed down. Waverly had made his point.

There are those who think that, if Waverly hadn't provided that window of opportunity for Solo to attempt the rescue, Napoleon would have gone against orders and attempted it anyway. I definitely don't believe that. Napoleon would have -- albeit reluctantly and with a great deal of personal frustration and mental angst -- adhered to Waverly's decision. Nor do I believe Solo would have left U.N.C.L.E. in the aftermath of that decision. But I do believe that in that aftermath, Napoleon would have been something of a different man internally (he would have never let it show on the outside): undoubtedly more cynical and less optimistic of personality.
