MFU 30-Day Meme: Day 19
Jul. 10th, 2011 02:46 amDay 19 – Saddest moment: The ending scene in THE TERBUF AFFAIR
No question for me on this one: That moment in the boat when Napoleon goes to put his hand on his forehead and realizes it is still chained to Clara's as, oblivious of that chain, she ministers to her husband is quietly heartbreaking. Illya's line "We'll break the chain when we get to Italy" and Napoleon's response of "No hurry; it's not holding anything together." just furthers that heartbreak.
Napoleon obviously cared so much for this woman and she used her knowledge of his feelings for her to manipulate him for what she needed. He went out on a proverbial limb for her, was put before a firing squad, and even called upon his friendship with Illya to have the other man save her spineless husband. All for the love he bore her. And in the end she completely ignores him as she fusses over that spineless husband. There is no sadder moment, in my opinion, during the entire run of the series.
