Hmmm... it gives a writer pause...
Writing my MFU "Napoleon in Survival School" story has turned out to be a much bigger project than I initially thought it would be. It's almost finished now, and I really like the directon in which it wound up going, but you know what was really hard to keep in perspective? The fact that, at the time in which the story takes place, U.N.C.L.E would have had less than a decade of history as an organization!
The story takes place in 1954 since I used as a basis the little factoids that in the SURVIVAL SCHOOL episode Illya says he graduated in 1956 and in the FIDDLESTICKS episode. Napoleon refers to himself as Illya's senior officer by two years. Okay, that was easy. Yet if you take it that U.N.C.L.E. as an organization originated about the same time as the United Nations (which seems pretty much the general consensus), then it would only have been around since about 1946!
This "reality" gave me fits! When considering backgrounds for instructors who might have been ex-Section II agents, I only had about eight years to play with. Definitely not ideal, since I started out thinking some of them might have as much at 15 years experience in the field! No can do on that, though of course they could have previous experience with other intelligence organizations.
I finally found a setup that worked for me in this regard, but when I started out I can't say I even considered the fact that U.N.C.L.E. would have been in 1954 still pretty "fledging" as an international group. Just goes to show that sometimes you don't realize what you might be getting into when you start a story from a particular concept. [chuckle]
I do hope, however, to have the story finished and posted to my website this weekend. Hallelujah!
