I came up with my own background, too, uniting the two ideas but yes, I agree that Napoleon acts like someone who grew up in the vicinity of money but didn't have it [or lost it] himself.

He does seem to resent rich people who throw their money around too. Remember the remark to Tenza in 4th season about what do folks get you for Christmas. Whenever he deals with the privileged, ther eis barely concealed contempt.
